11 Easy Tips To Become An E-Bay Power Seller
Sure, you can become a Power Seller if you’re a big physical company and have employees working the Ebay Department. You know how it works: Listing, Packing, Shipping, Paperwork!
A lot of businesses have new products they offer and simply repeat selling the same thing over and over, quickly achieving the Power Seller status.
But I didn’t fit that description. I didn’t have ‘new’ things to offer on a repetitious basis.
I knew I could make good money by selling on Ebay. I also knew that to be successful with any type business, you have to work at it. “Work for the business and the business will work for you” I had always heard, and I knew it was true. So, I’d like to share with you how I made it happen and continue to do so:
1. I found a product I like to handle, which takes up little space, is lightweight for shipping, and keeps me from getting bored with it.
2. I dedicated myself to listing, listing, listing to build an inventory in my Ebay store. I stayed focused, often eating at the computer (still do).
3. I made listing a PRIORITY. I took it seriously.
4. I set a goal of listing so many one-of-a-kind unique items per day or per week. I didn’t allow myself social activities if I hadn’t met my goal, but rather stayed home to complete it. Using EBay’s Turbo Lister, it became easier to list on my local computer and then upload in segments of 10 items at a time. I’ve found it takes approximately 15 minutes for each listing if I work consistently.
5. I realized a clean look and factual statements were important to my buyers. I try not to give my opinions about whether something is good or bad. They don’t care about my opinion because they have their own. I just want to give them the facts as I see it. I keep my pages consistent in looks by using my own template. When someone sees my page, they can identify it with me, as the seller.
6. I describe the items by color, shape, size - and let my buyer decide if it’s right for them. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I let my pictures speak for me. No clutter, please. No cutesy animations or fancy fonts, either.
7. I size my pictures no more than 500 dpi in any one direction. I compress them in Photoshop to 50%, which allows faster downloading for people who are still using dial-up connections. I keep my pages sized for viewing in 1064 x 768, which is the standard window size, to eliminate any scrollbars at the bottom. Viewers don’t like to have to scroll over to see a large picture in its entirety. If I were using Ebay’s photo hosting I would size the picture at 400 dpi, but I host my own so I have the privilege of going larger with the picture.
8. I price my items right. Researching the sale prices of my competition gives me an idea of what something will sell for. I realize even though the competition is overwhelming, I still get my FAIR SHARE. I don’t underprice, as this makes my item appear cheap or flawed. If one person doesn’t like my price, someone else will. The world is full of bargain hunters. Pricing too low also means more work because I would need more volume, which also requires more time.
9. I offer my items WORLDWIDE. It’s easy to pack and ship small pieces. I’ve sold to Britain, Italy, Norway, Spain, Germany, Japan, Australia, and many more countries. I take International orders to the Post Office once a week and mention this on the page. Eliminate extra trips and gas expenses by going once. I charge a flat International shipping fee, which includes gas and generic packing envelopes.
10. I send USA orders within 2-3 days. . . sometimes even the same day. I use Priority mail and stamps.com for the labels. I order free Priority boxes from the post office online and get them delivered to my door. I charge actual priority mail postage plus 5 cents for my packing labor. I don’t like to be overcharged for shipping, so I practice the golden rule.
11. I always include a business card with the order. (I put a business card into every piece of mail, including bills, that leave my house.) You never know who may need or want what you’re selling! I designed my own cards in Photoshop. (Can do some for you, if you desire them.) I also print out a receipt and write “Thank You”, which I include in the package.
All the above steps have created a large inventory for me to sell and has established a reputation which brings me repeat business and referrals. Using this as a guide, in time, will have YOU as a Power Seller also.
