Tiki Bar Hut | Patio Tiki Bar | Bamboo Tiki Bar for the Backyard

There’s nothing more relaxing than enjoying the outdoors in a Tiki Bar Hut, or as some would call it, a Palapa!

Years ago, my family moved to South Florida from a northern state. My dad had bought a house with some acreage. Part of the land contained some out-buildings that housed goats.

Well, he had other plans for that out-building, so out went the goats, along with the walls, which came tumbling down. My father raised the roof and faced the four corner posts with split bamboo from a bamboo strand on the property.

He literally split the bamboo stalks lengthwise and nailed them to the posts for a more tropical look. He wanted to create a picnic shelter, and a picnic shelter, indeed, came into being. Actually, it was more like an outdoor barbecue room, and it did house a picnic table or two.

He also nailed dried palm fronds to the roof of the shelter, overlapping them to simulate a thatched roof tiki house.

I remember my Mother and Father inviting their church members over for pot-luck dinners on Sunday afternoon in their homemade palapa.

I’m not sure if natural bamboo tiki bars were made back then, commercially, but if so, he could have benefited from one that was more pleasing. Ours was definitely a rough specimen!

Today, with the Internet, one can buy a real tiki hut, even one with a built-in sink! Now that would have been a luxury for my family…instead of carrying food and dishes back and forth between our tiki building and the main house.

What fun it would have been to have the Internet back when I was a child. I can see my dad ordering Tiki Masks, statues, fishnets, and rope garland to dress up his hut. And, because we were living in Florida, we already had the palm trees for that tropical flair. Oh, yes, we had the Tiki torches, too.
